Andreas Charalambous, PhD
Professor
Dr Andreas Charalambous BSc, MSc, PGCert (Research), PhD (Oncology Nursing), is a Professor in Oncology and Palliative Nursing Care at the Cyprus University of Technology and Adjunct Professor (Docent) at the University of Turku, Finland. Andreas started his nursing career in 1995. He obtained his BSc in Nursing Science in 1999 by the Northumbria University (U.K), his MSc (Nursing Science) in 2002 and his PhD (Oncology Nursing) in 2008 from Middlesex University (UK). He has a proven track in academia since 2004. He is the founder and Past-President of the Cyprus Oncology Nursing Society, European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS) Former President and European Cancer Organization Immediate Past President. He is also the Founder of the Cancer Nursing Fund and the European Cancer Communities Foundation. He is involved in National and International research programs (HORIZON2020, ERASMUS+, COST) in various fields of cancer care. Examples of externally funded projects include: PI in the ERASMUS+ project PROLEPSIS, PI in the ERASMUS+ project SAVE, PI (Cyprus team) in the ERASMUS+ project COMPASS, PI (Cyprus team) in the EU4HEALTH Joint Action Project eCAN, PI (Cyprus team) in the HORIZON project INCISIVE and PI in the EU4HEALTH project TRANSiTION.
He has published over 200 National and International publications in esteem journals. H-index 41 and i10-index 105.

Theologia Tsitsi, PhD
Lecturer
Dr Theologia Tsitsi is a Lecturer in Surgical Nursing at the Dept. of Nursing at CUT, teaching in both Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programs. She completed her PhD in Oncology Nursing at CUT in 2014. She holds an MA in Healthcare Management from the Open University of Cyprus (2010), an MSc in Nursing from the University of Liverpool, UK (1997), a BSc (Hons) in Professional Studies in Nursing from Anglia University, UK (1995), and a Diploma in General Nursing from the Nursing and Midwifery School in Nicosia, Cyprus (1993). She is actively involved in various research activities, as a senior researcher, project manager, financial manager, and evaluator of research program quality. She participates in several national and international research programs, including Erasmus+ projects such as Apps4carers, Tender4Life, PROLEPSIS, NM4SAFETY, SAVE, eLILY2, HERO, SeniorVlog, Compass, and EU4Health projects such as TRANSITION, DESIPOC, and the OpenCARE project, which will begin in January 2025. Her research covers various areas of care, with a particular focus on cancer and palliative care, surgical nursing and elderly care. She works on applying health technologies for cancer patients, dementia patients, and caregivers. Elena Papoui, PhD
Lecturer
Dr. Eleni Papoui is Lecturer in the Nursing Department at Frederick University. She graduated from the Department of Nursing at CUT in 2013 with a grade of 8.382/10. She has a Master’s degree in Epidemiology and Biostatistics offered by CUT in association with the Harvard School of Public Health with a master's degree of 8.48/10, and she has a PhD in Nursing in the field of Oncology from CUT. She had excessive clinical experience as a Nurse in the Intensive Care Unit at Nicosia General Hospital and she was a Clinical Instructor at various departments in Nicosia General Hospital. Also, from 2014 to 2020, she worked at the American Medical Center in Nicosia, Cyprus, in the ward, ICU, and Oncology department. She is a Certified Instructor Train the Trainers of HRDA (Human Resource Development Authority of Cyprus), and has a Certification in Advance Medical Life Support (AMLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS). Her PhD was conducted at the Department of Nursing at CUT and focused on the field of Oncology Nursing. The subject was the management of skin reactions caused by modern cancer therapies, such as Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Inhibitors (EGFRIs) and immunotherapy. Two publications in a high-impact international scientific journal were realized. The first was for a pilot randomized controlled trial, published in the European Journal of Oncology Nursing, and titled: "A pilot randomized controlled study of the effects of an educational training program on skin reactions induced by chemotherapy, Epidermal Growth Factor Inhibitor (EGFRI) treatments, and immunotherapy". The second was a systematic review, titled: “The extent to which the last decade has yielded additional treatment options for EGFR-associated rash besides classic treatment with antibiotics and corticosteroids. A systematic review.” This Ph.D. work contributed to a deeper understanding of oncology patients’ needs and enhanced their care through targeted nursing interventions, with direct applications in clinical practice.
Andri Christou, PhD, MSc, BSc, RN
Clinical Instructor | Special Teaching Staff
Dr. Andri Christou is a Clinical Instructor and Special Teaching Staff at the Department of Nursing, Cyprus University of Technology, with over 20 years of combined clinical and academic experience. She holds a PhD in Oncology Nursing, with doctoral research focused on the effectiveness of honey as an adjunct therapy in preventing salivary gland damage (sialadenitis and xerostomia) in thyroid cancer patients undergoing radioactive iodine (I131) treatment. Her teaching and coordination duties span undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including the MSc in Advanced Nursing and Health Care Practice with a specialization in Oncology Nursing. She has contributed to curriculum development, clinical education, and thesis supervision. Her research interests include oncology nursing, symptom management, complementary and integrative medicine, palliative care, and health promotion. She has authored peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and technical reports, and has participated in national and EU-funded research projects, including PROLEPSIS and Tender4Life. She is an active member of the European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS) and the Cyprus Nurses and Midwives Association. Driven by a strong commitment to evidence-based practice, patient-centered care, and interdisciplinary collaboration, she aims to strengthen the connection between clinical practice and academic excellence.
Melanie Charalambous, PhD
Nurse Educator
Melanie Charalambous graduated from the Cyprus School of Nursing in 1999. She holds a Bachelor's Degree from the Southbank University of UK (2002) and an MSc in Surgical Nursing from the Middlesex University of UK (2005). In 2014 she obtained her PhD in Oncology Nursing from Cyprus University of Technology.
She worked for 6 years in surgical and oncology departments and has 20 years of experience in Nursing education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels teaching both at Cyprus University of Technology and private universities in Cyprus. Since 2013 she has been working as a Nurse Educator in educational Sector of Nursing Services of Ministry of Health. She develops and implements Postgraduate Specializations Programs for Nurses and others Health care professionals.
Her research interests encompass nursing education, surgical and oncology nursing. She contributes extensively in Nursing Research and public health and she participates in several national and international research programs, including Erasmus+ projects such as NM4SAFETY, HWE4CCN, Life +Medea, Compass and Reward.
Dr Charalambous has collaborated with the public and private Medical and Nursing Departments of Cyprus Universities, patients and health care associations developing various events and conferences within the framework of continuous professional development. She is also active on professional platforms such as Research gate and Linkedin.
Nikolina Dodlek
RN, BSc, MSc, PhDc
Nikolina Dodlek is a PhD candidate at CUT and a Teaching and Research Assistant at the Department of Nursing, as well as at the Faculty for Dental Medicine and Health, Department for Nursing and Palliative Care, in Croatia. She holds a Master’s degree in Nursing and specializes in oncology nursing, palliative care, digital health, and cancer survivorship. She has over 15 years of clinical experience as an oncology nurse and has served as Head of the Department for Oncology at Croatian Clinical Hospital Canter at Dept. for Oncology. She is co-founder of the Croatian Oncology Nursing Society and the first specialized oncology nursing education programs in Croatia. She served as a Board Member of the European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS) and is currently an Editorial Board Member for several scientific journals and a Councilor in the Association of Cancer Education (ACoE). Within the European Cancer Organisation (ECO), she acts as Vice-Chair of the Research and Policy Network and Chair of the Young Cancer Professionals (YCP) Steering Committee. She is also an active Board Member of ECO. She participated in multiple national and international research projects. She led the NURTURE project and currently serves as a Research Associate for the ALTHEA project and Project Manager for the iNTERVENE project at CUT. Her research interests focus on innovation in digital health technologies to enhance cancer supportive care, palliative care, and survivorship, particularly among adolescents and young adults (AYA) with cancer. Her work explores the use of virtual reality (VR) and technology-based interventions to reduce physical symptoms (pain, fatigue, nausea) and psychosocial distress (anxiety, depression), while improving caregiver wellbeing, usability of digital platforms, and long-term quality of life outcomes in cancer populations.

Iolie Nicolaidou, PhD
Assistant Professor
Dr. Iolie Nicolaidou is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Communication and Internet Studies at the Cyprus University of Technology. She holds a Ph.D. degree in Educational Technology from Concordia University in Canada. She has a Master’s degree in Educational Media and Technology from Boston University (2002), where she studied as a Fulbright scholar, and a BA in Primary Education from the University of Cyprus (2000) with a specialization in Natural Sciences. As a researcher in Educational Technology, her work focused on the design, implementation, and evaluation of emerging technologies for learning in naturalistic contexts to solve specific problems. Over the past four years (2020-2024), she established an independent research program focused on Emerging Technologies for Learning and Health. Her current research lies at the intersection of educational technology, digital health, and serious games. Her work focuses on designing and evaluating interventions supported by emerging technologies, such as serious games, gamified applications, and Internet of Things (IoT), to enhance learning, improve mental health, and promote behavioral change. Her research addresses real-life societal problems and adopts an interdisciplinary, problem-focused, participatory design approach. Her key contribution is the development of evidence-informed interventions for learning using emerging technologies as well as the extraction of theory-informed design guidelines for developers of learning applications. She has been involved as a Principal Investigator (PI), local coordinator, or senior researcher in 5 projects in the past four years (2000-2024) funded by the European Union (Horizon2020, EU4Health, Erasmus+) and Cyprus national grants (CUT) (total of approximately 5 Million euros in research funds). She has published more than 100 papers in international, highly-cited, peer-reviewed journals and in proceedings of international scientific conferences. She published her work in four of the top-8 journals of the Educational Technology field (based on Google Scholar, as of Jan 16th 2025), Computers & Education (1st), Education and Information Technologies (2nd), Interactive Learning Environments (4th) and International Journal of Emerging Technologies in Learning (iJET)(8th), with the last three journal papers published between 2021 and 2025. She published her work in journals such as Social Science Computer Review, Information Communication and Society, Digital Health, and the Journal of Medical Internet Research, the top journal of medical informatics.

Efthyvoulos Kyriacou, PhD
Assistant Professor
Dr Efthyvoulos Kyriacou is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Electrical, Computer Engineering and Informatics at CUT and Head of the University’s eHealth Laboratory. He received diploma and PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the National Technical University in Athens Greece in 1996 and 2000 respectively. He has more than 25 years of experience in ehealth systems, emergency telemedicine systems, medical imaging systems and intelligent systems applications in medicine. He has more than 200 scientific papers published in refereed journal, conference proceedings and book chapters in these areas (Citation: 5100, h-index: 34 at Google Scholar, Citations: 3040, h-index: 27 at Scopus February 2025). He has been involved in numerous projects in these areas funded by EU, the National Research Foundation of Cyprus, the INTERREG and other bodies. He was Guest Co-Editor of 7 Special Issues. He is a co-editor of the book Ultrasound and Carotid Bifurcation Atherosclerosis, Springer, UK 2012 (66K downloads Bookmetrix Sept. 2021). Moreover, he served as an Associate Editor of Elsevier-Journal Computer Methods and Programs in Biomedicine from 2020-2024. He served as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Trans. on Information Technology in Biomedicine from 2007 to 2010, he serves as a reviewer in many journals related to his research fields. He was the Program Co-chair of CAIP 2023, ITAB 2009, BIBE 2012, Medicon 2016, Melecon 2016 and was in the program committee of several other scientific conferences. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE and one of the main founders and the first chairman (8/2008-1/2019) of the IEEE Cyprus Engineering in Medicine and Biology/Signal Processing chapter.
Georgia Liapi, MSc
PhD Candidate
Georgia D. Liapi is a Biomedical Engineering PhD Candidate at the eHealth Laboratory of the Cyprus University of Technology, supervised by the Assis. Prof. Efthyvoulos Kyriacou. She holds an MSc in Systems Biology from Maastricht University (The Netherlands), with a focus on Deep Learning for Ovarian Cancer histological type and molecular subtype classification in W&E images, based on supervised training. She holds a BSc in Chemistry from the University of Patras (Greece), where she developed skills in traditional Western Blotting, and Immunofluorescence Microscopy, studying the role of a cell transmembrane receptor and a cell cytoskeleton remodelling-related protein in the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition, in Breast Cancer cells. She is currently working on the analysis of Carotid Ultrasound Videos to detect high-risk atherosclerotic plaques, to assess the risk of Stroke.
